Vivaldi's Spring

Check out these beautiful pictures inspired by Vivaldi's music

Listen to the music Antonio Vivaldi wrote about spring almost 300 years ago (1723).

It is in three parts:

1st movement

2nd movement

3rd movement

The first time you listen, try to imagine how spring looks all over the countryside. Imagine the weather, the flowers, the animals.

The second time you listen, read this poem that Vivaldi wrote to accompany the music.

After listening for a third time, write down the answers to the following questions and draw a picture of what you hear in the music:

What dynamics do you hear? Is it forte, piano, or a mixture of both?

What is the tempo of the music – allegro (fast), andante (slow) or a mixture?

What do you think is the mood of the music? Happy or sad or a mixture of emotions?

What instruments can you hear?

  1. Hi Ms O'Brien
I think that the 2nd movement sounded like a sorrow tune because I would have imagined it would be happy as everything comes back to life in spring and you should be happy.AARON

  2. I agree with you Aaron. You'd expect a piece of music called Spring to be full of life and happiness, and the 2nd movement (largo/slow) seems full of sorrow. In the poem that accompanies it though, the 2nd movement is about a sleeping goat herd... So maybe he's not sorrowful, maybe he's just asleep!!

  3. The music was a mixture of tempos. The music is happy at the start, sad in the middle and it is happy at the end too. I heard violins, chello, flute, piano and bass when I listened. From George

  4. The music is a mixture of forte & piano. The first one is happy and the second one is sad. Then the third one is happy again. I can see little birds, flowers and sunny days when I listen to the music. I can hear a violin. Grace D.

  5. Hi Ms O'Brien. I think it is a mixture of both. The tempo of the music is fast in the first, the second was slower with a mixture of slow and fast in the third. The mood of the music is a mixture of happy and sad. I mainly heard the violin. I like this music, thank you. Darragh
